General Description

This course applies and develops the rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic materials of Music Theory III through ear training, sight singing, analysis, and dictation.

Content

This course resides in a sequence, and elements of this course may appear in another course within the sequence. 

Minimum topics:

  1. Melodic and Harmonic:
    1. melodic chromaticism
    2. secondary/applied chords
    3. modulation to closely related keys
    4. all inversions possible
  2. Rhythmic:
    1. triplets at the subdivision and beat level
    2. duplets and quartolets at the beat level in compound meter
    3. more advanced syncopation, including at the subdivision level

Additional activities

  • Perform and sight-read rhythmic exercises in two and three parts
  • Perform single line rhythm and sight-singing exercises while conducting
  • Detect errors in rhythm, pitch, and/or solfege
  • Perform exercises in one or more parts (canons, duets, chorales, sing and play the piano, sing and clap rhythms, etc.)
